2018 Connecticut Auto Insurance State Minimum Limit Increase

Effective January 1, 2018, PUBLIC ACT. NO. 17-114 will take effect. This act increases the minimum amount of automobile insurance a person must maintain to register a vehicle. The following is language taken directly from the act:

Prior law required minimum liability coverage of $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident for bodily injury and $10,000 per accident for property damage. The Act increases these minimums to $25,000, $50,000, and $25,000, respectively.

The bottom line, if you're carrying 20/40/10 auto insurance in CT, your rates are about to rise in 2018.

So here is our question to you: “Why are you still carrying state minimum insurance limits?” If you're like most of our customers that carried state minimums when they met us, you probably just haven't received good advice.

When we all get our first auto policies, without our parents – if you had that luxury, it's very common to start at the state minimum level. We don't own homes at that stage of lives or have many assets so we can “afford” to take the risk. However, this is where things get counter-intuitive. If you carry higher limits of coverage, your future insurance rates will drop and often DRAMATICALLY. Most of our customers ask us “How can that be? It doesn't make sense!” The struggle is understanding how you can get much more coverage and pay less for it. At first, it doesn't make any sense but I'll explain why it does if you look at it from another angle.

When you carry higher limits of coverage the insurance carriers deem you “RESPONSIBLE”. When you shop for coverage again in the future carrying these higher limits of coverage, it will yield you cheaper rates at renewal time. Sometimes it takes as little as 6 months but it may take up to 1 year to receive these reduced rates. For our customers it's easy. We put their insurance re-shopping on cruise control. When we counsel our customers, we get them to start raising their coverage as soon as financially possible because we know after a short period of increased prices, you will be rewarded with a future of much cheaper insurance rates.

Here's a few of our recent results:
We were able to help a customer from Bristol jump from 20/40 to 50/100 and saved him $43 per year. The big savings will come at his next renewal when he will be rewarded for carrying 50/100 coverage.

A New Britain customer just jumped from 20/40 up to 100/300 and we saved them $400 per year. Again, even though $400 is a great savings, there will be even more savings at renewal time!
